Project/Course:The summer program at the Université de Technologie de Troyes (UTT) combines the fundamentals of project management with European perspectives.
Even though I was born in New York, I never grew up in America because my father’s occupation necessitates regular relocation assignments. Soon after my birth, my family moved back to Taiwan. This marked the beginning of my peripatetic life. As I grew, I attended kindergarten in South Africa, elementary schools in Taiwan and Germany, middle school and the initial years of high school in mainland China. My travels have now come to full circle as I continue the remainder of my education in the United States. Living a nomadic lifestyle is an overall experience through which I have gained respect and appreciation for intellectual, social, and cultural differences.n business, history and culture. The program is based on the UTT campus, with multiple excursions in the surrounding Champagne region of France. Students will spend a weekend in Paris, participate in an outdoor adventure weekend in Evian les Bains and tour local cultural sites. Courses are taught by UTT faculty in English.

Project/Course: Study Abroad: Oxford University, Magdalen College: July 8th-August 13th. Class: English Literature, Shakespeare. We will cover a plethora of Shakespeare’s works, encompassing tragedies and comedies. There will also be a 4-day field excursion at the end of July.
I am a junior studying Neuroscience and English, aiming to become a psychiatrist and a successful author. My many interests include research, volunteering, waterskiing, quantum physics, and writing. I am originally from Poland and have traveled to many places in Europe, but have wanted to go to England, especially Oxford, for years. This ambition surfaced mainly because of England’s beautiful landscape and the vast growth it can allot me as a writer who has already won national competitions and co-authored a published short novella. I think the experience of interacting with other cultures and environments is essential for the proper understanding of life and how concepts and theories are applied in reality.
Project/Course:This summer, I plan to conduct anthropology thesis research on World War II memory in Japan. Though I originally intended to explore the impact of cute, or kawaii, representations of WWII on collective memories of the war, I am sure these plans will transform as I begin my research. At its broadest, this question is fueled by my curiosity about how desire and material objects impact the construction of history. During my 3 months in Japan, I will be visiting wartime museums, interviewing relatives and other contacts about the war, and exploring neighborhoods associated with cuteness to examine how it impacts social relationships, and what bearing this has upon the construction of World War II memories. With the recent earthquake, this research has assumed an added significance as the lingering specters of postwar radiation and destruction weave their way into everyday discourse about Japan’s past and future.
I am a rising senior concentrating in Anthropology, with minors in French and Community Action/Social Change. I have spent my time at Michigan exploring my interests in research and activism. Through my work with two student groups, the Restaurant Workers Justice Alliance and Immigrant Rights On Campus, I organize students to participate in local labor rights and immigrant rights issues, and I conducted independent research on the relationship between Detroit social service agencies, community organizing, and politics. Post-graduation, I hope to broaden my experiences by pursuing a graduate degree in politics and working as a community-based research coordinator. I also enjoy dabbling in graphic design, creating posters for student group events and drafting promotional materials for the Anthropology Department.

I will be traveling to Ghana for one month (arriving Aug. 1, returning Aug. 30 or 31) to do on-site research in a teaching hospital in Kumasi as part of the College of Engineeing Minor in Multidisciplinary Design, Global Health Design Specialization. Our global health challenge is focused on the theme of maternal health. My team of four or five students (both engineering and LSA majors) will be embedded in groups of two with medical teams in Kumasi and will be doing clinical observations. We will spend three weeks in Kumasi and one week at a rural clinic. At the end of the month we will be formulating a design concept with the input of our Ghanaian colleagues which will in some way work to improve maternal health in the county (previous projects include portable obstetrics and gynecology equipment and an automated blood transfusion device), using primarily materials that are locally available in Ghana. This project will continue for two semesters after we return, and will also serve as my senior design project.

I am very excited about travelling to China and enrolling in the UM-SJTU Joint Institute summer program. It is a tremendous way to learn about Chinese culture, and I will be able to earn credits toward my UM engineering degree.

Project/Course: Bern, Switzerland, Summer Independent Research Internship
This summer I have the opportunity to participate in a research internship with the Department of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at the Inselspital Hospital in Bern, Switzerland. I will work with Drs. Th. Slongo and Kai Ziebarth.
My current studies at UM have given me a broad background in physiology and the basic sciences that form the foundation of medical knowledge. I am excited to use the information I have learned in my classes to contribute to the research at the Inselspital. I am confident that the instruction that I have received at UM will have adequately prepared me to apply my knowledge to a wide variety of medical situations. In addition, I am looking forward to learning more about the actual research process and how doctors can use research as a tool to assess treatment efficacy and investigate new treatment options for the future. This has been a point of emphasis in my classes at UM and I am excited to experience it firsthand.
